Before You Collect

Insurance for Car Leasing & Subscriptions

Every 1 month car lease, subscription and short-term lease requires you to arrange your own fully comprehensive insurance before collection. Here's what that means in practice.

Why insurance isn't included

Car subscriptions and leases bundle almost everything into your monthly payment — the vehicle itself, maintenance and servicing, road fund licence, manufacturer's warranty and breakdown assistance. Insurance is the one major cost left out, and it's left out for a good reason: it depends entirely on you, the driver.

Your age, licence history, claims record, occupation and address all affect your premium, so providers leave it to you to shop around and arrange a policy that fits your circumstances, rather than baking a one-size-fits-all estimate into the price.

Key point: most providers won't hand over the keys without proof of fully comprehensive insurance in place for the exact vehicle you're collecting.

What to check before you buy a policy

  • Fully comprehensive cover — third party or third party, fire and theft typically won't satisfy a lease agreement.
  • The right vehicle details — registration, make and model must match the car you're leasing.
  • Policy start date — cover needs to be active from the day of collection, not after.
  • Business use — flag this if you'll be using the car for work, deliveries or commuting to multiple sites.
  • Named drivers — add anyone else who needs to drive the vehicle.

Frequently asked

Insurance — FAQs

Why isn't insurance included in a car subscription or lease?

Insurance is priced individually based on the driver — age, licence history, claims and location — so providers leave it to customers to arrange their own policy rather than trying to price it into a flat monthly fee.

Can I use my existing car insurance policy?

Only if your existing policy allows you to insure a different, specific vehicle for the length of the agreement. In most cases you'll need a new short-term or annual comprehensive policy covering the exact leased vehicle.

Do I need fully comprehensive cover?

Yes, providers typically require fully comprehensive insurance as a condition of the lease or subscription agreement, since it protects the vehicle they own.

What happens if my insurance lapses during the agreement?

Driving without valid insurance would breach your leasing agreement as well as UK law. Set a reminder to renew ahead of expiry, or choose a policy that auto-renews for the length of your lease.
